An Update on Me
Hello again! Exchange has been keeping me busy, just as always, and I thought I might have a quick update on what's been new for this week. So recently I have moved host families just for two weeks while my first host family take a trip over to South Africa. Lucky things! So, the family I am with now will also be hosting me in the last 4 months of my exchange in Sweden as well, so it is great that I get to know them really well beforehand.
It's been heating up in Piteå recently, turning the snow into sludge, and it almost feels like Spring! Or at least, what I assume would be Spring weather for the laplands. Unfortunately, this means ridiculously slippery grounds. So far, I have managed to keep on my feet, but I'll make sure to keep you informed when I do have my first, and most likely funny, slip on the ice. As the snow begins to melt though, it's as if my town is truly being revealed to me for the first time! What once used to be simply mounds of snow have developed into all sorts of architecture, and it's like coming to a whole new town. If this much change can occur in one month, I'm excited to see what the rest of the year has on offer as the seasons fabricate all new worlds.
Which reminds me, the world of music is opening up even moreso since I moved to this host family. In their house, they have probably the coolest room ever. What exactly is the coolest room ever? A music studio of course! My host dad is a great drummer - you can often see him tapping some cool beat even when he's away from his MASSIVE drumset. Tomas came over the other day, and we spent the evening rehearsing some music. Piano, drums, singer...it's almost a band! haha. The acoustic feels strange to me, because I'm not used to singing with a microphone, but I'm sure I will get used to it soon. I have also recently joined a gospel choir that rehearses every second Thursday, and I have also joined a music class at Strömbackaskolan now! The kids of that class have been so welcoming already, and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better.
On the topic of school, you might be wondering how my knowledge of the language is going so far. I'm happy to say that beginner Swedish lessons are really helping to increase my vocabulary, and I'm now moving up to a higher grade to push myself just that little bit more. Give me another month and I'll be fluent. Okay, that's a little bit of an exxageration - but one can dream, right? The language is very strange sometimes with it's rules (or no rules at all ). Half the time I ask why the language is as it is, the Swedes will tell me 'you just have to feel it'. Alright.
So that's a little bit of an update of my week so far. This weekend I plan to head off for some downhill skiing/snowboarding again with my friends at Valsbegret, then I'll be celebrating a birthday with some other friends of mine! Exchange really is non stop action.
