Kan Du Prata Svenska Med Mig?
Language camp!! This week, I had the chance to travel down south to Bollnäs for a week with my fellow exchange buddies. Of course, the adventure started as soon as I hopped on the bus with my friend Jaymie to begin a 10hour ride to the camp. Being amazing navigators, it didn't take us long to miss a train and become 2 hours off schedule. Luckily for us, we have one awesome friend who acted as tour guide, and the loveliest train conductors who allowed us on the train for free after we explained our dilemma. Finally arriving fashionably late, it was wonderful to grab some food and meet everyone!
Now the great thing about camps is you always have your friends around to experience everything with you and make everything the best of fun. I love how well everyone was able to get along and relate to each other's experiences as an exchange student. It doesn't take long to feel like you are all part of one big family.
Firstly, let's talk about a few of the things organised for the camp itself. Along with the language and history lessons, we also had activities to keep us busy throughout the week. This included watching a live bandy game, which I can only explain as a different version of ice hockey. The hype of the game is awesome, and it's amazing to watch how freely these players glide on the ice. And here I am slipping on the sidewalk...maybe they can give me some lessons.
We were also taken out another night for winter games, and I have to say, I loved it! We were taken to the slopes with a mat in our hands, and off we went. It was the simplest and best of fun. You would climb the hill, only to find yourself spinning 360's as you tried to control yourself on the ride down. This often ended with a mini snowstorm when we rolled off the matts with a crashing halt. The best ride was definitely with Jaymie when we ATTEMPTED doubles. The speed picked up ridiculously fast, and controlling the direction was impossible. It was a game of dodgems as we passed through the ski lift, and then the dramatic end left us rolling down the hill in a wave of snow. Whose game enough for round 2? I am!
Being teenagers, we were also very good at keeping ourselves entertained during the free time. This could be anything from card games, monopoly (Sorry Jack, you never had a chance against me :P),spotlight or a walk over a frozen lake to what would be an island during the Summer. We also kept ourselves busy with some massive snowball fights between the exchange students which we managed to capture all on video! Such fun. Then of course, a camp wouldn't be complete without lots lollies to keep us going, which meant trips to ICA and Max's. I recommend the mozzarella sticks.
Overall, I can say that language camp was an absolute blast, and I loved meeting so many amazing exchange students throughout the week! I'm looking forward to seeing them all again ASAP! But until then, I'll be with my lovely Swedes up north in the laplands :)
